Best travel shoes for women

Nothing can spoil a trip like ill-fitting footwear. At best, inappropriate footwear can be uncomfortable and spoil a walk. At worst, it can cause permanent injury or even lead to an accidental slip, trip or fall, which is the last thing you need when you're on vacation.

When traveling, however, most of us do not really want a suitcase full of bulky shoes slowing us down. Nevertheless, it's really important to pack a small selection of footwear that is going to meet all of your needs. Let's take a look at some of the best travel shoes for women depending on the type of activities that you'll be taking part in on your trip.

Walking shoes

Walking shoes are a great option for trips that involve moderate walking on reasonable terrain. Most walking shoes are a cross between a pair of sneakers and hiking shoes, combining comfort and flexibility with good tread and support. Walking shoes are generally lightweight and breathable, making them ideal for long walks in hotter climates. But if you're thinking of tackling harsh terrain and adverse weather, they might not quite be up to the task.

These days, walking shoes are so popular that brands are now creating them in a variety of styles. The bulky, athletic type of shoes you may associate with this genre are now available in pretty pump form in a number of colors. This means you get all of the benefits and support of a classic walking shoe but in a style that can be worn with feminine, pretty outfits.

Walking boots

Walking boots

If you are planning a hiking trip, walking or hiking boots are a must. They are heavier than walking shoes but offer much more protection. They come up the ankles, which protects you from scratches and grazes in overgrown areas. This also offers additional support around the ankle area to prevent twists or sprains should you take a tumble in tricky terrain. The sole on a boot is generally stiffer and stronger than a shoe, which makes them ideal for navigating rocky ground. Nearly all brands of hiking boots have a waterproof lining, so they are a good choice in wet, snowy or cold conditions. Some hiking shoes offer this, but they are not standard in the same way that they are with boots.

Sneakers

Sneakers

From canvas court shoes to big, sporty names, sneakers are universally recognized and effortlessly stylish. They tend to be comfortable but may lack support for long walks. Beware of running sneakers, which may cause more harm than good for walkers. They offer cushioning in the areas of the sole that hit the ground at high impact when running (usually the ball of the foot). However, this is not the same sort of support as you need in the rhythmic, less impactful act of walking, and it can cause strain on the foot to walk for miles in shoes designed for running.

Sliders

A pair of sliders and flip flops are the perfect convenience shoe for getting out of the shower, padding around the pool, or navigating sandy beaches, but they offer little to no support or tread when it comes to walking. Sliders are usually light and inexpensive, and if you are planning a relaxation vacation, you will almost certainly find them useful. However, you shouldn't rely on them for walks as they simply aren't enough.

Sandals

Sandals can be a pretty, versatile shoe that can complement vacation outfits perfectly. But they are not all created equally. There are many athletic, walking sandals on the market that offer the same sort of benefits as a walking shoe, only with lots more breathing space. If you want something that doesn't necessarily look sporty, you can opt for fashionable sandals as long as they have a solid base and good ankle straps for support. Even then, it won't be the ideal shoe for tackling long walks or harsh terrain, but it does give you the option to pair pretty shoes with a nice evening walk.

Heels

Heels

Regardless of the type of vacation, most women will almost always make use of a pair of heels at least once! Even the most action-packed trips need downtime, and what better way is there to enjoy your free time than to get glammed up and hit the bar or restaurant in the evening? This time, it's not all about comfort and support - it's about looking and feeling fabulous!
